Rep. Jerrold Nadler said he is sending document requests to more than 60 people and entities tied to Trump. The probe, he said, could eventually lead to impeachment.

By Mike DeBonis and Mike DeBonis Congressional reporter covering the House of Representatives Email Bio Follow Rachael Bade Rachael Bade Congressional reporter Email Bio Follow March 3 at 10:38 AM The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee said Sunday that he plans to request documents from more than 60 people and organizations connected to President Trump as part of an inquiry that could eventually lead to his impeachment.

“Impeachment is a long way down the road. We don’t have the facts yet. But we’re going to initiate proper investigations,” he said. Nadler said he has made no determination about whether to proceed with impeachment, but he said he has grown increasingly convinced that Trump has obstructed justice — an offense that was included in the impeachment articles passed in the House against both Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton.

Nadler’s announcement comes as the investigation led by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III appears to be nearing an end. Nadler said that probe, focused on ties between Russia and Trump’s business and campaign, would represent the beginning, not the end, of his committee’s probe.
