Speaker Nancy Pelosi says new “Dream and Promise” bill is one of top priorities as many could face deportation under Trump administration.

By Maria Sacchetti Maria Sacchetti Reporter covering immigrant communities and Immigration and Customs Enforcement Email Bio Follow March 12 at 9:25 AM House Democrats plan to present a broad immigration proposal Tuesday that would allow more than 2 million immigrants to apply for U.S. citizenship, including “dreamers” and those with temporary work permits who could soon face deportation under Trump administration policies.

Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard , chair of the House Homeland Security Appropriations subcommittee and the lead sponsor with Reps. Nydia M. Velázquez and Yvette D. Clarke, both Democrats from New York, said Speaker Nancy Pelosi has flagged the legislation as one of her top concerns. That estimate is more than three times the 674,900 immigrants enrolled in the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program as of February. Trump criticized the Obama administration’s program as a way to skirt Congress; he ended it in 2017.

[End of immigration program gives Liberians in U.S. a choice: Leave their American children or become undocumented] Dreamers would be able to apply for 10-year conditional green cards if they came to the United States when they were 17 or younger and if they have lived in the country for at least four years, among other requirements. They would be able to obtain full green cards after completing at least two years of postsecondary education or military service or after working for three years.
