Rep. Suzan DelBene, D-Wash., and Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., announced Wednesday they introduced the 'Prevent Tariff Abuse Act.'

Two House Democrats announced Wednesday they introduced a bill preventing the president from imposing duties on imports under an emergency powers act.

The International Emergency Economic Powers Act currently allows the president to regulate imports after declaring there is an unusual and extraordinary threat to the U.S. economy. Rep. DelBene suggested in a press release the law would be abused with tariffs like those President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to impose on countries "ripping us off.”

Rep. Beyer noted he has warned during both Democratic and Republican administrations that Congress has ceded too much authority to the executive branch to unilaterally raise tariffs, “but Donald Trump’s willingness to abuse those authorities poses particular risk of chaos and damage to the U.S. economy.”

“The American people have clearly and consistently said that the high cost of living is one of their top concerns. Imposing sweeping tariffs on imported goods would raise prices on consumer products by thousands of dollars a year,” she claimed.
