The legislation follows the July assassination attempt against Donald Trump, which the Secret Service has fielded scrutiny over.

Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., on Tuesday introduced new legislation which would strengthen security provided by the Secret Service., directs the Secret Service to expand its security perimeter at public events to 500 yards. Such a distance is within the range of “firearms likely to be used in an assassination attempt,” the bill reads.
The bill also requires the agency to secure any elevated surfaces within that range. The Secret Service director would be charged with determining how much this change would cost the agency. The representative also introduced the “Focus on Protection Act,” which would remove the Secret Service’s responsibility to investigate financial crimes. It would instead "transfer the investigative jurisdiction over payment and financial systems” within the Treasury Department.
Rep. Torres’s bills follow the July assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, which enraged lawmakers from both political parties. Areleased this month found most Americans doubt the ability of the Secret Service to keep presidential candidates safe in the wake of the scare.Around 3 in 10 Americans described feeling "extremely" or "very" confident in the Secret Service in the poll.
