Hotel groups laud Penang’s ‘bravery’ over curbs on Airbnb, homestays FMTNews
Hoteliers in Penang are expecting a return to the festive season boom that they enjoyed before short-term rental accommodation operators came along.
He said this would lead to lower long-term rent in Penang as more residential properties are freed up for people wanting to live on the island. G Hotel general manager Michael Hanratty said the next big step for the state government is to level the playing field in terms of taxes. Hanratty said the impact of the new regulations would be felt during festive seasons, as more people will consider staying in hotels.
She said that because platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com are international companies, it is uncertain how the regulations would be reflected on their platforms.
