“We are known for ‘party music’, but I often wondered: can I come up with any words which will make people feel like having a good time?” says Taylor. “The whole world [was] struggling to see each other, wondering whether they had a career any more, wondering if they could pay the bills. There’s a lyric on the new album: ‘This led to an existentialism coursing through the veins of. Just look at the song titles: “Broken”, “Out of My Depth”, “The Evil That Men Do”.
There are songs about feeling stuck on a loop, songs about being broken, songs about being inflexible and brittle and ready to snap. But the album never feels exhausting. Evendarkest moments feel euphoric; “Eleanor” has a beautiful melody built around a promise to face the rough times head-on. “When the world smashes into you//Let it be a central part of you.”Both Clarke and Taylor credit the bond between the five members of Hot Chip for getting them through the other side.
While it’s clear the album offers release and respite, touring it presents more than a few knots to unpick. “We’re just working our way through tricky situations,” says Clarke. “I hope that audiences will be there. The harsh reality is that everybody, including us, is thinking about energy bills, and what to spend your money on and what you can afford to do. Can people afford to attend a gig?”
