One of the Adrift Lab study authors, University of Tasmania scientist and researcher Dr Jack Rivers-Auty, has a background in human biology, so he is always considering how his fauna findings might relate to human pathology. It found devastating scarring inside the stomachs of the birds, inconsistent with anything else they had ingested.Credit:The above image shows a progression of scar tissue in the bird stomachs, affecting bacteria-fighting glands and stomach acid vital in fighting off bacteria and allowing the absorption of nutrients.
“I think the most dangerous site in the human body would be the lungs ... there have been some studies including an Australian one which shows that 40 per cent of household dust is made of plastic, and that means we’re breathing it in,” Rivers-Auty said.reports that microplastics are already in the atmosphere, our food and our drinking water.The potentially deadly effects of fibrotic diseases, such as asbestosis or silicosis, are already widely accepted.
