During a Christmas-themed on-court skit, a young Hornets fan was given a PlayStation 5, only to have it swiftly removed by team staff moments later.
A young Charlotte Hornets fan thought he was receiving a Christmas gift when he was presented with a coveted PlayStation 5 during a game on Monday night. However, the team took the video game console away from him backstage moments later. Alexei Phillips said that he and his 13-year-old nephew were invited to participate in an on-court skit with the team's mascot, Hugo, dressed in a Santa costume. An announcer read what appeared to be a Christmas letter from a fan requesting a PlayStation 5.
The teen was visibly excited as Hugo gave him the gift. According to Phillips, the holiday cheer ended when a Hornets staffer took the PS5 away backstage. Phillips said that a staffer had previously whispered to him that the teen would not be able to keep the gift and would instead receive a jersey. The Hornets described the incident as an 'on-court skit that missed the mark.
