The Honor Robot Phone combines multimodal intelligence, advanced robotics, and “next-generation imaging' for its concept design.
On October 15, Honor announced its next flagship, the Magic 8 series, at a launch event in China. Alongside the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5-powered devices, the company also teased a concept phone with a sci-fi-like camera.
But unlike the pop-up selfie cameras from the past, this one sits on a fold-out robotic arm. The new concept device is called the Honor Robot Phone, and it is shows the capabilities of agentic AI. I’m intrigued by the design because I haven’t seen anything like it on a phone before…and obviously so. Iti is hard to engineer a robotic arm inside a smartphone and the Honor Robot Phone is still a concept. However, it is teased to be showcased at the next Mobile World Congress trade show.The Honor Robot Phone’s gimbal-mounted camera unfolds from the rear of the device with a giggle. It’s said to be an AI-powered camera designed to serve as an emotional companion that can “sense, adapt, and grow” with its user. Honor claims it combines multimodal intelligence, advanced robotics, and “next-generation imaging.” The teaser video suggests that the Robot Phone is smart enough to soothe babies, judge your outfits, frame photos, and be quirky. It is housed inside a camera module resembling that of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and folds out when needed.Overall, the phone looks thicker than usual, but I’ll know more when I get to see a working prototype early next year. “With the Robot Phone, Honor envisions the future phone as more than just a tool,” the company wrote in a press release. It is part of’s Alpha Plan, a strategy to transition from a smartphone company to an AI company. Whether the engineering team can actually deliver on that vision remains to be seen — but it’s an interesting concept nonetheless.
