It’s taken more than 106 years, but finally, a full military burial belongs to PFC Charles McCallister.

It’s believed that McCallister died during the Army’s first large-scale offensive operation of the First World War on July 19, 1918. His remains, along with another soldier, were untouched in an unmarked grave for 86 years, finally found in 2003. One set of remains was identified immediately as Pvt. Francis Lupo, using artifacts found with him, including a wallet with “Francis Lupo” engraved on it and through modern technology. A lab was able to match mitochondrial DNA from the bones found in France with a distant relative of Lupo’s who offered a saliva swab.

There was a uniform collar insignia that indicated a Washington State National Guard member, Company D, 2nd Regiment. Company D mustered from the Seattle area. Pvt. Lupo was from Cincinnati. There was also a medal that indicated service in the Mexican Border Campaign, which included the Washington National Guard 2nd Regiment.
