The Dungeons & Dragons movie is focused primarily on the franchise's fantasy lore, but introducing a gameplay element could make it even better.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is trying to adapt the tabletop franchise one more time, and leaning into the game can make character deaths secretly hilarious. There have been multiple attempts to adapt Dungeons & Dragons over the years, with it appearing as everything from a big-screen movie to a joke in Futurama.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Dungeons & Dragons has an astonishing depth of lore, and when tackling the franchise that can seem overwhelming. However, when it comes to adapting for screen there is a lot to be said about the mechanics that lie behind a player’s creation of a character and their enactment of that character’s life story.

When a player’s character is killed in Dungeons & Dragons, they usually still want to play the game. While they should roll up a completely different character , it’s not entirely uncommon for a charitable Dungeon Master to allow a fresh character sheet to be drawn up for a new character who is almost identical. This allows the player to keep enjoying the game, despite significantly reducing the consequences of the original death.

Dungeons & Dragons Silliest Tropes Can Make It A Better Movie While implementing Dungeons & Dragons style character cloning in Honor Among Thieves might cheapen the idea of death, it would be in keeping with the tone of the movie. Trailers have shown an appropriately irreverent note, and it seems that everyone involved is having fun. By having a dead character’s identical twin appear, Honor Among Thieves can keep that comedic tone light while still having deadly situations.

Moreover, using this sort of replacement character in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves can show that the writers truly understand their source material and how the players have traditionally engaged with it. While it is strange that Honor Among Thieves is skipping the easy story framing device of having the characters represent real-world players, there are already some lore-deep cuts in the trailer, and viewers will want to see their own relationship to the game play out on screen.
