Two 14-year-olds who admitted to taking part in an unlawful assembly during an anti-government protest outside Hong Kong’s Polytechnic University last November will not have criminal records, after a magistrate ordered the charges be struck out.

The two teenagers were initially accused of rioting on Gascoigne Road in Jordan on November 18, the day when protesters clashed with police outside PolyU in Hung Hom. Taking part in a riot is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Subsequent investigations found the girl had opened an umbrella to shield roadblock-building protesters from the view of police. The boy, meanwhile, was seen giving directions to frontline protesters.

A record number of 213 defendants charged over the protest on November 18 were brought to six courts across Hong Kong two days later. Some were also charged at a later date. Pleading guilty on petrol bomb charges, Hong Kong protester expresses regretThe boy, who was 13 when he and other protesters allegedly attacked an undercover police officer, was also charged with false imprisonment, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and wearing a facial covering during an unlawful assembly.
