Protesters occupy the arrival hall of the Hong Kong International Airport during a demonstration on August 12, 2019.has cancelled all departure flights not yet checked in by Monday afternoon, as thousands of protesters occupied the main terminal building.

Both road and rail traffic heading to the airport was congested as throngs of protesters made their way to the airport to express their anger over violent clashes that took place on Sunday evening. A three-day sit-in that was supposed to end last night was growing by the hour this afternoon.

A backlash from the business sector, community leaders and foreign governments during the consultation period prompted to the government to make some changes to the bill, but popular opposition has continued to grow to an unprecedented level. At a time when protesters had been calling for an independent inquiry into alleged police brutality, officers adopted even more aggressive tactics on Sunday evening that left some demonstrators bloodied and beaten as they were arrested. One protester was said to have suffered a ruptured eye after getting hit by a projectile fired by police.
