Honda and Acura issued a recall for over 294,000 vehicles in the US due to a software issue that could cause engine stalling or power loss. This recall affects several models, including the Acura MDX Type S, Honda Pilot, and Acura TLX Type-S.
Honda and its premium brand Acura are recalling 294,612 vehicles in the United States due to a software issue that could result in engine stalling or loss of power. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) announced the recall on Wednesday. The recall affects certain 2022-2025 Acura MDX Type S, 2023-2025 Honda Pilot, and 2021-2025 Acura TLX Type-S models.
According to the NHTSA, a software error in the fuel-injection electronic control unit may lead to engine failure, increasing the risk of crashes or injuries. This recall underscores the critical importance of reliable engine performance, as stalling on a major road could lead to serious accidents, even fatalities. It marks the third major Honda recall in less than a year. In October 2024, nearly 1.7 million Hondas were recalled due to steering problems, and another 700,000 were recalled simultaneously for fuel pump issues. This latest recall stems from an NHTSA investigation into engine failures in 1.4 million Hondas produced between 2016 and 2020, initiated on November 8, 2024. While the investigation focused on rod bearing failures in six-cylinder engines, this recall is attributed to a distinct software error. Jake Berg of Acura Public Relations clarified to Newsweek that the current recall and the 2024 NHTSA investigation are unrelated. This extensive Honda recall coincides with a series of recent recalls by other major automakers. Just five days prior, Ford recalled 270,827 Bronco Sport SUVs and Maverick pickups due to faulty 12-volt batteries. Four days before that, Kia recalled 80,000 vehicles for wiring defects in their airbags and seat belt safety systems. A month earlier, Tesla recalled 700,000 vehicles because of an issue where cars failed to alert drivers about low tire pressure, potentially leading to accidents. The affected Tesla models included the 2024 Cybertruck, 2017-2025 Model 3, and 2020-2025 Model Y vehicles. Honda remains a prominent player in the automotive industry, renowned for producing numerous best-selling vehicles in America. For instance, Honda's CR-V secured the fifth position on Car and Driver's list of the most popular SUVs, cars, or trucks in the U.S. in 2024, and the Honda Civic ranked as the 10th most popular car in America last year. Notably, neither of these models is included in the current NHTSA recall. Honda continues to invest in its future, planning to release a new battery-electric SUV, the 2026 Acura RSX, later this year. This model will mark Honda's first fully electric Acura not based on a General Motors platform.
