After decades of planning, a big chunk of land in Fayette County has landed its first major economic development project --an EV battery plant.
JEFFERSONVILLE − For decades, Dave Martin, owner of one of the biggest chunks of land set aside forSure, he had plenty of offers over the years for the 2,300 acres of prime land that sits just east of Interstate 71 in Fayette County, including one from an Australian company that wanted to turn the flat site into a year-round ski slope built under a dome, but nothing ever seemed quite right or fit in with his soybean processing business.
"Everyone knew it was going to happen at some point. They didn't expect to be as big and fast as its occurring," said Dan Dean, president of the county commissioners."It takes a willing community and all the players in the community to work together," he said. . Gov. Mike DeWine has proposed the fund so that the state would have ready-to-go locations for the next significant development. His company invests in rail, river and other projects meant to deliver Ohio soybeans to the rest of the world with a particular focus on southeast Asia.at his farm. Workers unload the containers − which are about the size of a semi-truck trailer− and truck the parts to Honda factories and other locations.
The company's name comes from the turf that it used to grow that was used in such places as Ohio Stadium when the field was last made of grass. Over time, seven other property owners joined them, increasing the amount of land available to 1,100 acres. Grants were obtained to provide water and sewer to the site and other infrastructure improvements, and Blue Grass received a forgivable loan to expand its rail operation. The effort nearly paid off in 2006 when Honda began searching for a site for a new plant, a project thatGreensburg, Indiana.
"It was not kept quiet," he said."Everybody knew about the mega-site. As a matter of fact, everyone was saying, 'Is this guy ever going to make his mind up.'"
