FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A shooting death in the Yukon River community of Russian Mission is being considered a homicide, and one man has been arrested on murder charges.
Patrick Changsak, a 46-year-old resident of Russian Mission, reportedly died at his house on Monday, February 5 from gunshot wounds. Alaska State Troopers received reports from the community that 45-year-old Richard Pitka, also from Russian Mission, had shot Changsak at the house. However, due to bad weather, AST along with investigators from the Alaska Bureau of Investigation were unable to fly in to Russian Mission until the next day. Russian Mission resident Daniel Askoak told troopers on their arrival that he saw Pitka enter Changsak’s house holding a rifle. Askoak heard one shot as Pitka was walking through the porch, then another shot 10 seconds later. Former health aid Myron Askoar said that he was called for medical help, and when he got to Changsak’s house Pitka was holding Changsak. The rifle had been removed from the premises and was left locked up in Daniel Askoak’s connex. Changsak was brought to the local clinic, and pronounced dead just after 6 p.m. Pitka was located and detained by community members in the Public Safety building until law enforcement officers arrived. In his statement to AST, Pitka said that he went to drop off the rifle at Changsak’s house for Changsak to look after. Pitka said he was sitting opposite Changsak in his recliner with his hands in his lap and the rifle to his left, when the rifle just went off and shot Changsak in the left shin. The trooper said in his report that he found what appeared to be a bloody bullet hole in the lower back of Changsak’s chair and another in the frame of the chair. He also found a live 30-30 bullet outside in the snow. Due to the nature of Pitka’s rifle, the hammer would need to be cocked back and pressure applied to the hammer in order for it to fire.Pitka has been involved in several previous criminal charges, including harassment and assault charges. Changsak’s body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, and his next of kin have been notified.AK order threatens to toss future state agreements if contractor boycotts IsraelFilming fights in Iraq
