Homer Glen is pursuing taking over jurisdiction of the corridor from Will County so that it can have more control over plans, but needs more information on accidents, flooding or drainage problems, and maintenance costs.

Homer Glen officials seek to stop a Will County Department of Transportation study of County Highway 1, and plans to widen the road and the shoulders.

“This road is a beautiful road,” Neitzke-Troike said. “It is what Homer Glen is about. If they come in and change the look and atmosphere of the road, it will kill the beauty of this road.” Will County is in the first phase of studying improvements to the roadway, which runs from the intersection of Parker Road and U.S. Route 6 on the south, north on Parker Road, northeast on Chicago-Bloomington Trail to Hadley Road and ends at Will-Cook Road. The corridor, which runs through Homer Glen, Homer Township and New Lenox Township, was last reconstructed 42 years ago and has reached the end of its useful life, county highway officials said.

The region’s first post office was established in 1835, and mail was carried by horseback from Chicago, according to the village. The post office also served what is now present-day Worth and Oak Lawn.
