Shane Dwyer had approached his victim to beg for money, but ended up attacking him
A homeless man chased and battered another man in Liverpool City Centre . Shane Dwyer, 37, was out begging with his girlfriend on Church Street at around 1am on November 18 last year when the pair approached the victim, Anthony Johnston, who was drunk after a night out. Dwyer's girlfriend asked Mr Johnston for money, and he responded in a manner which Dwyer 'perceived to be an insult or a sexual advance'.
shown to the court captured the moment Dwyer launched his attack, knocking Mr Johnston to the ground, punching and kicking him. He was briefly restrained by a group of people as Mr Johnston fled in the direction of Hanover Street, but broke free and chased the other man. Further footage, taken from within Kurt Geiger, showed Dwyer slamming Mr Johnston into the glass window before kicking and punching him again. Following the assault, Mr Johnston was taken to Royal Liverpool Hospital, where he needed 11 stitches in a cut on his eyebrow. Brendan Carville, defending Dwyer, who has 27 convictions for 47 offences committed in both Ireland and Merseyside, said: 'At the time he was out with his girlfriend, they were street begging, they were both homeless.
