Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem recently reached out to Scott Bessent, head of the Internal Revenue Service , to request the use of IRS investigators to assist with the Trump administration’s mass deportation plan., Noem made the request in a memo on February 7.
“It is DHS’s understanding that the Department of the Treasury has qualified law enforcement personnel available to assist with immigration enforcement, especially in light of recent increases to the Internal Revenue Service’s work force and budget,”tasked with enforcing tax law and making arrests, if necessary, of those who evade paying taxes.
“The Posse Comitatus Act was enacted in 1878 to end the use of federal troops in overseeing elections in the post-Civil War South. It bars the use of the military to enforce domestic laws, including immigration law,” Cohn wrote in a commentary forlast month. “The act forbids the willful use of ‘any part of the Army, the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Air Force, or the Space Force as a posse comitatus or otherwise to execute the laws.
