ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Inspired by a true story of overcoming immense odds, James Morrison returns to Anchorage to star in “ Leave Your Fears Here ,” a play about his son beating brain cancer .
Morrison has an interesting philosophy on acting. It involves being triggered by something — an emotion — that allows him to engulf himself in the character he’s playing. “Cancer is dark, and for that reason, I think we sort of shy away from it, but it’s touched us all in one way or another,” Morrison explained. “We’ve either been caregivers, we’ve known somebody who has had it. We’ve had it. We’ve lost people to it.”
“I think that’s what causes people to act in two ways — they either are fully in and, ‘I’m here. This is what you need. I see what you need, even though you can’t tell me. And here it is.’He says he wrote the play for a multitude of reasons, but he really wants people to know they are not alone. It’s a dark subject, but Morrison shines light and delivers laughter in what could be cathartic for viewers experiencing something similar.
It’s a true challenge for Morrison, who typically takes on imaginary roles, but now plays himself in a one-man play written by himself. Morrison’s story has a positive ending. His son Seamus is now a happy and healthy 25-year-old. He graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara and continued on to Pepperdine University to earn a master’s degree.
