James Sunderland, an aide to James Cleverly who is seeking re-election as MP, made comments at event in April
In the recording first obtained by the BBC, Sunderland, who is James Cleverly’s parliamentary private secretary, said: “The policy is crap, OK? It’s crap,” before adding: “I have been part of this for the last two years, and I’m immersed in it and I probably shouldn’t say too much.”
Sunderland has been a parliamentary private secretary to Cleverly and worked for his predecessor Suella Braverman. He told the BBC: “Whilst the opening words were clearly designed to shock and grab the attention of the audience, the point he made was absolutely right in the latter part of the quote, which is the effect, the deterrent effect, on the people-smuggling gangs and the people they’re trying to make money from, is what we are seeking to achieve.
“I’m not saying stupid things,” he said. “I’m not on the front page of the newspaper. I’m doing my job.
