Athletics: Australian teenager Torrie Lewis shocked 100-metre world champion Sha'Carri Richardson to take out the 200 metres in her Diamond League debut in China.
Aussie teen topples world champion ! | 00:43Torrie Lewis wrote in a Facebook post earlier in the month that she was both “slightly terrified” and also “very excited” to announce she had entered her first Diamond League event.
But the Australian teenager did not look one bit overawed by the occasion as she stunned reigning 100m world champion Sha’Carri Richardson in the women’s 200m event. Lewis, who was in lane nine, came home strong to take the victory in a photo finish ahead with a time of 22.96 while Richardson came second ahead of Tamara Clark in third.
However, Lewis revealed in a post-race interview that she did not realise she had won until watched a replay of the finish on the big screen.“I didn’t notice I beat them until I saw the replay and I was like, ‘Holy sh***... Holy crap.’ So surreal,” Lewis told“My goal, honestly, was just to hold on as long as I could. I was in Lane 9 so I knew they would be chasing me so I expected them to be in front of me by 50 or 60 so I just wanted to hold on as long as possible.
“I just did nationals on Sunday so I came straight here from that and this is most of their season openers so I knew I had an edge coming in but I wasn’t sure because I’ve never raced them .”
