January 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a date designated by the United Nations to honor and remember the victims of the Holocaust and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides. The mantra of Holocaust remembrance has long been a simple one: Never forget.
As a society, we encourage and value freedom of speech. It is protected by the U.S. Constitution, and it is what distinguishes life in the United States from life under the Third Reich. But hate speech can be criminalized if it is an “incitement to imminent lawless action” or “communicate[s] a serious expression of an intent to commit an act of unlawful violence to a particular individual or group of individuals.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.
