With SAG-AFTRA set to hit the picket lines, Hollywood studios and insiders are reaching out to the federal government to help avert an actors' strike.
Hollywood studios and insiders are reaching out to the federal government to help avert an actors' strike. The WGA strike, ongoing since May 2, has had a massive effect on the entertainment industry, causing delays to both movie and TV production. But an industry already reeling from one walk-out could be about to face a double-whammy, as actors’ union SAG-AFTRA prepares to go on strike itself, if a new deal is not reached by the deadline on Thursday, July 13.
As Hollywood holds its breath ahead of a potentially costly actors' strike, Variety reports that studios and industry insiders are now calling for federal mediators to step in and help avert a walk-out. Disney chief Bob Iger, Warner Bros.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT A Potential SAG-AFTRA Strike Is Already Having Effects With a strike looking increasingly likely, SAG members have reportedly been advised to avoid this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con 2023, leading several studios – including heavy hitters Netflix, Disney, HBO – to pull out of the event altogether.
Strikes in the entertainment industry are of course not unprecedented, but for two major unions to walk out at the same time is very rare. The last instance of both the writers and actors striking at the same time happened in 1960, when a Ronald Reagan-led SAG went on strike amid a writers' walk-out that had already been ongoing for months. It’s looking more-and-more like a repeat of 1960 is in the offing, with the ultimate ramifications for the entertainment industry still to be seen.
