But the design of this enterprise—the live taping, the unevenness of the play, the facile punch lines built into the script—ran contrary to that mission. It felt like a selfish exercise preaching to no one but the choir, at a time that couldn’t be more urgent, more deserving of art that matters. We don’t need to make the case for the importance of art at a time like this; art is able, as ever, to move, inform, shock, and provoke us.
