Hollyoaks actor Angus Castle-Doughty, 27, on his grandmother’s tears over him playing a woman-hater, feeling bad after ‘mean’ scenes, and wanting to collect qualifications.We all have a bit of Eric in us. We’ve all felt lonely and not listened to. I felt lonely when I moved to Liverpool to join Hollyoaks. I was living on my own and didn’t know anyone. A couple of weeks after moving, I split up from my long-term partner, and it was so much further away from my family than I’d lived before.
I’ve started making some content with the Hollyoaks digital team to try to raise awareness of the dangers, because I don’t think some boys even realise that they are getting radicalised in the way they are thinking. What do you do to unwind after filming some of the more shocking scenes, such as Eric spiking women’s drinks?
I visit a spa once a week, I sometimes talk to a therapist and I’m obsessed with exercise. I’d wake up at 5am and run 12 miles. My plan was to run a marathon but on my last run I did 16 miles and I got a hip injury, so I’ve replaced running with spinning and now I spin for hours. I was a national ski-racer from 11 to 17 and then played county rugby. I can’t do anything at half measure, I’m so competitive.
After that I effectively lied my way into a load of plays! There was an Irish play on at a pub in London, so I emailed the director and said, ‘I’m Irish and I would love to be in your play.’ I met the writer who was very much an Irishman and he said, ‘Well, you’re not Irish, are you?’ Luckily they gave me a part anyway and I got a dialect coach and got passably good.When I get really busy, I get a Deliveroo for every meal, but I actually really enjoy cooking.
