The boss fights of Hollow Knight: Silksong shine the most when they have a clearly defined theme behind their attacks, which is something the Widow of Bellhart doesn't fail to deliver. As the perpetrator behind the town's current hauntings, there's plenty of incentive for Hornet to take them down, but doing so will require quite a bit of effort on your part.
Utilizing the leftover Silk spread throughout Pharloom for her attacks, the Widow has a variety of moves that can take some getting used to, but after that, you should have no trouble taking her down. Thankfully, the right tools can also make quick work of this early game boss fight, allowing you to take in the experience without as much frustration. Best Equipment For Fighting Widow Given that Widow's moveset involves staying still while pulling rocks or crawling along the ground for extended periods, placeable traps like throwing the Sting Shards directly over Widow or Tacks along their path can deal excessive amounts of damage. Quick-throwing weapons like the Straight Pin and Threefold Pins are also reliable options for some additional damage in between attacks. If you're struggling or running out of tools halfway through the fight, saving most of them for Widow's second phase is a much safer choice to reduce the length of her empowered state. While several tools can make quick work of the Widow, combining them with the right tool boosters is even more helpful in making the fight easier. Upgrading your tool capacity, damage, and passive effects through accessories like the Pollip Pouch to combo for a formidable damage boost. For other accessories, there aren't many navigational ones in the early game that can help, although the Weighted Belt will prevent unnecessary hits from falling boulders while attacking Widow. Defensive tools are also a great boon to have, with the Bell shielding you from off-screen attacks while you try to heal and the Druid's Eye offering some additional healing potential. Thankfully, none of these tools can make the fight a complete breeze, meaning you don't have to spend too much time farming Rosaries or upgrading before facing Widow. If you don't have anything special, you don't need to worry about getting a perfect loadout. How To Beat Widow & Dodge Attacks Given that you won't be able to get your first nail upgrade before the Widow fight, you'll have to rely on staying alive by playing cautiously for the duration of the fight rather than simply rushing her health down. While her attack patterns can feel fast and overwhelming at first, it is a fairly limited moveset that isn't too difficult to learn. The first move you'll need to worry about involves calling down bells from the roof at a diagonal angle, which can offer a perfect chance to deal extra damage so long as you're keeping an eye on which direction they're landing. Widow will also call down several vertical bells to prevent your movement, which is the perfect time to launch projectiles or a Silkspear if you have extra thread to spare. Widow's next most common move involves jumping into the air before slashing diagonally, then running across the screen, which you'll want to avoid by dashing directly underneath her. If timed properly, this move can also allow you to get several diagonal pogo attacks in while she's running from side to side, which is a useful habit to get into when she starts slashing aggressively without the jump later on. Periodically, Widow will also dash without attacking to summon bell hazards from below. While you can risk getting pogo attacks if you feel safe, I find it more reliable to focus on wall jumping to get as high as possible before floating towards the side where they first appear. While it may take a few tries to get the timing down, especially during her more aggressive second phase, these tips are a great way to prepare for the fight ahead of time to make quick work of Bellhart's puppetmaster, making for one of the most rewarding bosses in Hollow Knight: Sillksong thanks to her thematic abilities and what it unlocks after.
