Holiday spirit is being spread at NORAD as they prepare to help folks locate Santa as he delivers gifts around the world.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Just four days away from tracking Santa Claus ' whereabouts, holiday cheer is in the air at NORAD as they prepare to share Santa’s location with the world.
As the crew at NORAD prepare to inform the world of Santa’s location, they too are getting in the spirit as the special mission of tracking the jolly gift giver brings joy to members of both the United States Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force. Efforts to track Santa began when a child accidentally called the Continental Air Defense Command, later known as NORAD, thinking it was a hotline for Santa. This spurred an effort to help families get to bed on time so Santa could deliver their presents.
This special mission conducted by NORAD begins on Dec. 1, when the webpage becomes available. The phone bank still exists and is manned by about 100 volunteers per hour, taking shifts from 4 a.m. to midnight mountain time, according to Derenzis.
