The winner of the Democratic primary is expected to take on former Gov. Hogan in the general election.

During the first and only televised forum before the Maryland primary for U.S. Senate in Maryland, the two leading Democratic candidates spent significant time attacking the favored Republican nominee, former Gov. Larry Hogan .

In a heated exchange between Rep. David Trone, D-Md., and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, both candidates argued they are best equipped to beat the popular former Republican governor. “After $45 million to defeat me, we are in a statistical tie in this race,” Alsobrooks said. “At the end of it, people will decide this race, not money.”recent poll

The candidates were asked, among other questions, if they support the death penalty. During her time as a state prosecutor, Alsobrooks sought the death penalty against a man accused of killing two young children and two other individuals. “With crime, we have to hold folks accountable. On top of that, we have to look at the roots,” Trone said. Trone went on to say that youth need a place to spend their time and engage in recreational activities versus criminal acts.
