New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a comprehensive plan to address safety concerns in the city's subway system. The plan includes increased police presence on overnight trains, installation of brighter lights and safety barriers in stations, and the establishment of 24/7 triage centers to assist individuals in need.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul unveiled Tuesday her plan to bolster safety in the city's subway system. She announced that she wants to see police officers stationed on every New York City overnight subway train for the next six months, working in collaboration with Mayor Adams to increase law enforcement presence. 'Working with Mayor Adams, we'll surge more law enforcement once again and put even more there,' she said, according to a transcript of her State of the State address.
'I want to see more uniformed police officers, not just on the platforms, but more importantly, on every single train overnight, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the next six months.' In addition to increased police presence, Gov. Hochul also outlined plans to install brighter LED lights in every New York City subway station by the end of the year, as well as barriers in 100 stations to prevent people from falling onto the tracks. 'Modernized' gates will also be implemented to stop fare evasion, she added. The governor emphasized that the safety of New Yorkers remains her top priority. 'And that means making sure our subways feel safe and are safe for every single rider and worker,' she stated. 'No one should be in fear that they'll be a victim of crime as they commute to work, go to school or enjoy a night out — that is why we're partnering with law enforcement, improving our infrastructure and ensuring that New Yorkers struggling with mental illness get the support they need.' To address the needs of those experiencing homelessness or mental health challenges on the subway, Gov. Hochul announced the establishment of 'triage centers' along major subway routes, accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 'This will make the subway less chaotic but also help strengthen the financial footing of the MTA,' she said. The announcement comes amidst growing concerns about safety in the New York City subway system. Recent incidents like the attempted murder of a man at the 18th Street station in Chelsea and the fatal fire on a train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station have fueled public anxiety. These events prompted calls for increased security measures and support for individuals struggling with mental health issues. New York City Mayor Eric Adams welcomed Gov. Hochul's commitment to utilizing state resources to enhance police presence in the city's transit system, stating on social media platform X, 'When I ride our trains and speak to everyday New Yorkers, they repeatedly tell me how they want to see more officers on our subways and more help for those suffering from severe mental illness.
