Governor Kathy Hochul introduced a proposal during her State of the State address on Tuesday, aiming to make SUNY and CUNY community college tuition-free for adult students pursuing high-demand careers. This initiative focuses on select associate degrees in fields experiencing a shortage of qualified workers, including nursing, teaching, technology, and engineering.
Hochul emphasized the practical benefits for New Yorkers seeking new career paths, stating, 'These are real savings for New Yorkers pursuing new careers and put money back in their pockets while helping us fill job openings in these critical jobs in these essential industries.' Finger Lakes Community College President Robert Nye expressed his institution's readiness to support students in these high-growth fields. He highlighted FLCC's recent expansion of its healthcare program and its established robust cyber networking and engineering programs. Nye also pointed out that 35% of FLCC's enrolled students are adults, making Hochul's proposal particularly beneficial for them. 'All the programmatic areas that the governor mentioned are in the top 10 of the most popular programs that we have,' Nye said. 'I think this is something that is exciting, not just for us, but for all of our colleges that have associate degree programs. And we're hopeful that the legislation will pass and the governor will be able to make this initiative come to reality, and we're excited.'Nye anticipates the proposal, which requires approval from the state Legislature, will stimulate enrollment and positively impact the community. Monroe Community College (MCC) also praised Governor Hochul's dedication to higher education in New York State. MCC echoed Hochul's focus on preparing individuals for family-sustaining wages and addressing workforce needs. They expressed enthusiasm about learning how the proposed tuition-free initiative can empower even more MCC students to achieve success
