franchise, as brawny folks zoom and thrash and travel perilously close to explosions. But over the course of eight movies, they’ve tended to do so with a relaxed kind of cool., with its submarine and all—but largely, those films have had a natural levity, gliding with an earnest sureness of purpose into some ridiculous circumstances.Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw
, that flexes and mugs and exhausts itself trying to impress its cousins—and thus us in the audience, too. The movie, directed bytries very hard to be cool, and silly, and tough, and sweet, and dumb, and clever. You know, like what thefranchise at its best can be. What results from all that unseemly effort is a movie that is, in fits and starts, a visceral jolt, but otherwise irritates in all its antic gesture.
