Kessler isn’t the only athlete who had a breakthrough performance in Portland this weekend.
→ Elise Cranny of the Bowerman Track Club improved on her previous 1500-meter personal best by three seconds to win the women’s 1500 meters in 4:02.62. Her Bowerman teammate Gabriela DeBues-Stafford also ran a personal best to win the women’s 800 meters. The Canadian standout finished in 1:58.70 to beat Sabrina Southerland, who ran a personal best under 1:59.
→ Bowerman’s Grant Fisher set a meet record by winning the men’s 5,000 meters in 13:19. And world champion Donavan Brazier won his first 800-meter race of the outdoor season, finishing in 1:45.09 to hold off Tonatiu Lopez. → U.S. marathon trials champion Galen Rupp made his return to the track on Friday after a three-year hiatus from the oval. In his first race sincein October 2020, Rupp finished fourth in the 10,000 meters. Suguru Osako, Rupp’s former Nike Oregon Project training partner, won the race in 27:56.44, unleashing a finishing kick to which Rupp could not respond. In the last 200 meters, Rupp was passed by American Jacob Thomson—who finished second and qualified for the U.S.
