This week, platitudes must become practice for the new governor of Arizona. Hobbs' work with a Republican Legislature begins in earnest Monday.
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs spent part of her first full day on the job helping to repair a residence at a mobile home park in Avondale. The next day, she mingled with business leaders at the swanky Spanish-inspired Omni resort in Paradise Valley.
If Hobbs' first week in office provided clues, they were that she will strive for a broad appeal in tackling issues like water and affordable housing. "I think the rhetorical message is, 'I want to work with you on a bunch of things, some of the things that I may not like as much as you do, but I'm willing to talk to you about it, as long as you're willing to talk to me about my priorities,'" said Roy Herrera, a Democratic attorney and former congressional staffer whose firm was one of more than 100 organizations that sponsored Hobbs' inaugural parties.
Her initial executive orders were in line with her policy priorities and campaign pledges. Her first order reiterated protections for sexual orientation and expanded the types of groups protected from discrimination in state hiring and contracts to include gender identity, marital status, ancestry and other categories.
Hobbs has reinstated the council as a separate body"to develop and implement a plan to prevent and end homelessness ... and to serve as a statewide homelessness planning and policy development resource," according to her executive order.
