Hoban loses season opener against state champion from Maryland.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Archbishop Spalding quarterback Malik Washington had a big first half as the Cavaliers defeated Archbishop Hoban, 28-14, at Dowd Field in Akron. Spalding is the back-to-back defending Maryland Class A champions.
Hoban, which reached the OHSAA Division II state final last season, was ranked No. 1 in the cleveland.com preseason Top 25. In the last nine years under head coach Tim Tyrrell the Knights have made it to Canton eight times and won five state championships. The last three seasons they’ve lost in the state title game.
Washington, a University of Maryland recruit, rushed for a score and threw three touchdowns passes to Myles McAfee in the first half. McAfee caught seven passes for 114 yards , scores of 20, 22 and 16 yards. The Hoban defense held Washington to just 35 passing yards in the second half. Tyler Boykin, last season starting quarterback for the Knights, has moved to wide receiver, but Boykin got his team on the board in the first quarter. He took a lateral and threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Callaway.Knights quarterback Ethan Ronsandich scored on a 1-yard run to make 28-14 with 6:36 left in the game.
