Renewal notices from HMRC will land on doormats from May 2

Around three-quarters of a million people will get a letter through their door this week from HM Revenue and Customs , telling them that they have three months to renew their tax claims or miss out on money off their tax bill.

Tax credit claimants can expect to receive one of these renewal notices at some point between May 2 and June 19, but regardless of the date you receive this letter, all people claiming tax credits will need to double-check that their information is correct with the taxman by July 31, or face losing an essential cash boost.

For some people, Working and Child Tax Credits have been replaced by Universal Credit, but around 730,000 people still claim the HMRC-backed benefit and will need to renew their information by this date. Anyone who has had a change in working hours, had a child leave home, or changed their relationship status, could lose their claim if they do not update their circumstances with HMRC.

Around 10,000 people each year will need to update this information or face missing out on Working or Child Tax Credit, which can be done via GOV.UK or the HMRC app, which allows applicants to track their claims. Failure to report any changes can result in a £300 fine, or a £3000 fine if you give the taxman the wrong information.

This could well be the last time that anyone has to renew their tax credit claim, as the system is set to be replaced by Universal Credit by April 5 2025. Before this change takes place, any claimants will receive a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions informing them of the change. You must also tell HMRC straight away if you:
