Published: Jan. 29, 2026, 6:17 p.m. The injured driver was transported from the scene of the Wednesday crash to Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Dan Gleiter | dgleiter@pennlive.com Pennsylvania State Police reported that a truck-car collision in Cumberland County on Route 34 on Wednesday was initiated by a third driver who subsequently fled the scene. The incident occurred at approximately 8:25 a.m.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the initial driver executed a left turn from Peach Glen Road onto Route 34, also known as Carlisle Road in that specific area, directly into the path of a northbound truck. To prevent a collision with the initial turning vehicle, the truck driver took evasive action, veering into the southbound lanes of the highway. This maneuver resulted in the truck’s cab and trailer, which was carrying approximately 40 tons of soda ash, overturning and colliding with a southbound Subaru Forester traveling on Route 34. The driver of the Subaru, later identified as 75-year-old Barbara Braband, a resident of Carlisle, required extrication from her vehicle by first responders. She was subsequently airlifted to Hershey Medical Center for treatment. The medical center confirmed that Braband was in good condition as of Thursday afternoon, although the specifics of her injuries have not been publicly released. Authorities reported that the driver of the overturned truck, which ultimately slid into a residence located on the west side of the highway before coming to a stop, was unharmed in the incident. Law enforcement officials stated that the driver of the vehicle that initiated the chain of events was last observed fleeing the scene, traveling northbound on Route 34. The accident report does not include a description of that vehicle; however, the police have stated that their investigation is ongoing. PennDOT officials indicated that Route 34 in Dickinson Township remained closed until shortly before 5 p.m. to facilitate accident response, debris removal, and the investigation of the crash. The investigation remains active as authorities gather further details and assess the situation. The presence of a significant amount of soda ash in the overturned truck presents additional challenges and considerations for the cleanup process. The incident highlights the potential dangers of reckless driving and the importance of adhering to traffic regulations to ensure the safety of all road users. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the driver who left the scene to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. The incident also serves as a reminder of the critical role played by first responders in providing immediate assistance and ensuring the well-being of those involved in such incidents. The timely response of emergency services and the coordinated efforts to clear the scene were crucial in minimizing further risks and restoring normalcy to the area. Further updates on the investigation and the condition of the injured driver will be provided as they become available
