History of first ladies can inspire future generations | Opinion
As White House Historical Association holds event in North Texas, one of its leaders reflects on contributions to history
One source for appreciating presidential history is the roster of more than 200 libraries, museums, birthplaces and childhood homes across the nation that focus on the histories of our presidents and first ladies. Texas has the distinction of being the only state in the union with three presidential libraries.
The George W. Bush Presidential Library here in Dallas, for example, helps visitors understand how Laura Bush championed the cause of literacy by drawing on her lifelong passion for education, a fundamental building block to her platform of human rights, women’s empowerment and the causes of global health and human freedom.
Betty Ford championed equal rights for women and used a personal health tragedy to start a national conversation on breast cancer.
