The six women experienced a 10-minute ascent aboard Blue Origin 's New Shepard rocket. This marked the 11th human spaceflight for Blue Origin , a company owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos .
The all-female crew comprised Lauren Sánchez, Bezos' fiancée; pop star Katy Perry; TV journalist Gayle King; Aisha Bowe, a former NASA rocket scientist and current leader of an engineering firm; research scientist Amanda Nguyen, and movie producer Kerianne Flynn.\ Sánchez, a helicopter pilot and former TV journalist, handpicked the crew. She collaborated with the co-founders of the Monse clothing brand to design the women's custom space suits, highlighting the unique tailoring required to fit women. 'Usually, you know, these suits are made for a man,' Sánchez revealed to The New York Times. 'Then they get tailored to fit a woman.' She showcased the suits on Instagram, emphasizing their elegance and added touch of 'spice' for the space journey. The launch brought together a host of VIPs to West Texas, including Oprah Winfrey, Kris Jenner and members of the Kardashian family, alongside previous private flight passengers. 'The best part was, when we got back in our seats after zero G's, Katie sang ‘What a Wonderful World,'' King shared. Nguyen spoke about her dream of visiting space being a part of her healing journey, finally fulfilling it. She is a sexual assault survivor and a dedicated advocate for other survivors. Flynn was profoundly moved by the experience, expressing hope for clearer pathways for everyone to pursue space travel. Bowe, having harbored this dream since childhood, stated she had 'picked the right dream.' Lastly, Perry emphasized the profound connection to love the experience ignited. 'I think this experience has shown me you never know how much love is inside of you, how much love you have to give and how loved you are until the day you launch,' Perry said.
