This resulted in record snowfall totals across the region, marking the highest snowfall ever recorded in Florida and Southwest Alabama. As the snow finally subsided by 10 p.m. Tuesday, temperatures began to plummet into the teens overnight.
Strong northerly winds persisted, leading to dangerously low wind chill values, potentially dropping as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit between 7 p.m. Tuesday and 11 a.m. Wednesday.A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday due to the extreme cold. Frostbite and hypothermia are possible if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. The prolonged period of freezing temperatures could also cause ruptured water pipes. While the snow is expected to taper off by Tuesday night, it will still be covering the ground on Wednesday, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions. Freezing on roadways is likely, making travel difficult or impossible on Wednesday and possibly Thursday.Officials urge residents to avoid all non-essential travel overnight as life-threatening cold temperatures and hazardous road conditions persist. Most area roadways are impassable due to the winter storm, and anyone attempting to travel could become stranded and exposed to the harsh conditions for extended periods. Temperatures are expected to drop into the teens and even some isolated single digits tonight, with wind chills reaching single digits and possibly dipping below zero.
