Two historic buildings adjacent to San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, Texas, have been listed for sale. The property, once owned by restaurateur Lisa Wong, has a rich history dating back to the mid-1700s. Wong had planned to renovate the buildings for apartments, retail, and a rooftop terrace, but the project has been delayed due to various factors.
A pair of historic buildings in the shadow of San Fernando Cathedral — the only property on San Antonio ’s Main Plaza between the church and the river not owned by the city or cathedral — has hit the market. More than a decade after she bought it, restaurateur Lisa Wong has listed the property along the River Walk for sale.
The history of the 7,500-square-foot property stretches back to the mid-1700s, said Alan Valadez, a global real estate agent at Kuper Sotheby’s International Realty who is marketing it. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime property,” he said. Wong, whose restaurants include Rosario’s and Ácenar, had long planned to refurbish the empty buildings for apartments, a rooftop terrace and retail. She said she expected the project to cost more than $5 million including what she paid for the buildings when she purchased them through a limited liability company in 2013. In February 2020, the City Council approved $1.1 million in funding from the Houston Street Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone for the renovations and gave a green light to a license agreement for patio space near the buildings. Each is two stories and includes a basement. In December 2020 and again in November 2023, council members approved Wong’s requests to push out the start and completion dates for the work. A memo by city staff cited the pandemic, rising interest rates and supply chain problems as reasons for the delays and suggested coordinating schedules as the city planned to renovate Main Plaza. Under the last extension, construction was supposed to begin in July 2025 and conclude in December 2026. The property was posted for sale on LoopNet last week. Wong did not respond to inquiries. The listing does not include a price for the property, which the Bexar Appraisal District values at $1.3 million. A buyer could use the reinvestment zone funds as well as $
