This famous lighthouse at the Delaware Bay may close to visitors beginning Sept. 6, 2024.
As the calendar flips to September, Nancy Patterson plans a birthday party for New Jersey’s second-oldest lighthouse, situated where the Maurice River meets the Delaware Bay.
An agreement with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, which has been incrementally extended in recent years, is now coming to an end, Patterson said. Volunteers have gradually left the nonprofit while the fate of the agreement remains in limbo, she said. At the base of the Heislerville Wildlife Management Area, with field lengths of marshes, the East Point Lighthouse has been actively warning ships of the shoreline with a restored beacon beginning in 1980. It’s listed on both New Jersey and the U.S. registers of historic places. Because the lighthouse sits in a wildlife management area, the DEP controls the lighthouse, allowing the nonprofit historic society to operate it under an agreement.Haystack Island.
The barrier between the water and the lighthouse has noticeably washed away from repeated storms over about 80 years, bringing the bay ever closer to the lighthouse grounds.no choice but to close the lighthouse to visitors
