The Buford Tower in downtown Austin has been completely restored after a fire damaged the exterior in 2021.

The original tower sat vacant for several years until 1978, when the local Austin chapter of the Women in Construction led an effort to restore the structure. It was dedicated to Captain James Buford, the first Austin firefighter to die in the line of duty. “I didn’t know how many people really cared for the tower until we had the fire,” McKnight said. “All of a sudden, everyone was so worried about the tower. As tragic as the fire was, it was also great to see the community really learning more about the structure and embracing the history and showing their support.

“Hopefully we’ve bought several decades, if not a century more, of life for this building,” McKnight said.
