A historic artifact stolen from the Helper Museum has possibly been thrown in the trash, officials said.
The artifact, a 100-year-old mining hat recovered from the Wattis Mine, was discovered missing around Aug. 31. Police could not find evidence of a suspect and asked local news for help.
After information on the missing hat was released, police were notified that a juvenile had stolen the hat and a headlamp from the museum. Police reached out to the juvenile and their parent and found the hat and lamp were stolen in August."The parent of the juvenile had discovered the item was stolen, from an unknown location, and discarded several items into the garbage approximately two to three weeks prior," a press release said.
Police said the parent didn't know the hat was stolen from the museum until information had been released about it. "Due to the item being thrown in the trash approximately two weeks prior, the item has not been recovered," the press release said. Identities of the minor and their parent will not be released, police said. There was no information released regarding charges against the minor.
