Joining a growing number of schools ditching gender-identified traditions during homecoming week, Hinsdale South High School dropped the king and queen titles this year to give all students the chance to be involved.
A district official on Monday said the entire student body was given the chance to select the two members of the senior court who would serve as this year’s “royalty.”After more than 800 students cast their votes during an all-school assembly last week, two male students were selected for the coveted spots.
“I understood the reasoning of doing it [this way] because there are people that don’t go by ‘he’ or ‘she’ — it was accommodating for everybody,” he said. Titles are not that important, Whitley added, but he was happy to choose the title of king, as someone who goes by he/him pronouns.Whitley explained that some students he spoke to were a little disappointed in the less traditional format because it didn’t guarantee both a male and female choice for homecoming royalty.
“We value student voice,” he said, noting that the school will begin surveys and data collection likely next week to gauge what students thought of the new format and if it’s something they would want to do again.
Hinsdale Central also switched things up, by allowing students to nominate themselves for court. One of the objectives of this practice was to eliminate the chance of someone being nominated by others if they did not want to participate, Jasculca said.
