Coach Hines Ward aiming to build Steelers-like bond with San Antonio ahead of XFL reboot
Nick Temple jumps up to high five San Antonio fans as the Commanders host San Diego at the Alamodome in the opening game for the Alliance of American Football league on February 9, 2019.When Hines Ward visited San Antonio in his role as the player relations executive with the Alliance of American Football, he was most struck by the passion of the area’s fans.
Ward visited San Antonio last week on a mission of “building buzz,” he said, including an appearance at his future home field in the Alamodome during UTSA’s opener against Houston. He hopes his initial face time in the community is the first step to replicating the bond between team and fans that he experienced in Pittsburgh.
While much about the league is yet to be announced, Ward’s focus has been finalizing an assistant staff, wanting to blend some youthful energy with veterans he can lean on for perspective. “He embodies what a defensive player is all about, man, so I’m extremely blessed and happy to have him,” Ward said. “When I got the opportunity, he gave me a call the next day and said, ‘I’m on the staff.’”
“I would like to keep some hometown hero players on our roster, just to have that hometown vibe and give fans a little something extra,” Ward said. “If it came down to two talented players, and one guy went to UTSA or was from the San Antonio area, I understand that, and I would probably lean with that.”
