Gerardi set out from Saint Bernard du Mont-Blanc Parish church in the center of Chamonix, France, around 2:02 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, returning to town around 9:30 a.m.
“This project has really been years in the making, especially because the last few years, we have been in a drought and haven’t gotten enough snow to fill in some of the key passages on the glacier. With high-mountain projects, you have to be ready to accept that there are a lot of things outside of your control,” she told.
There was more to Gerardi’s attempt than just fitness, though. An FKT on the new course, she added, required a mix of both trail running and alpine climbing and the ability to be prepared for conditions that change at the drop of a hat.
