Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is “too weak to stand up against the most rabid” members of his party when asked about the Republican-led impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
“I don't know how they can proceed with an impeachment if they haven't had a vote,” Clinton said on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki on Sunday. “I don't know how they're just basically blowing off the process.”"Sadly, the Speaker of the House is too weak to stand up against the most rabid block of his members who don’t care what the truth or the facts are… They want a political problem that they can try to use for their own benefit.
While a vote to open the impeachment inquiry is not constitutionally required, the move was a direct reversal of McCarthy's previous remarks. Democrats moved ahead with an impeachment inquiry into former President Donald Trump in 2019 without a floor vote, with Republicans like McCarthy strongly pushing back on the unprecedented process. Although Trump was acquitted in his second impeachment over his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and his first impeachment, Democrats skipping the inquiry vote sparked outrage among Republicans.
