“After the accident threatened to take running away from me forever, I didn’t think I’d be at an elite level again. This just showed me that I’m at my strongest.”
For Allen, this would be the longest race she has ever tackled, as she has traditionally stuck with the shorter ultramarathons.nearly killed her back in 2017. She broke two arms, two vertebrae in her back, and two ribs; popped a ligament in her right foot; endured multiple severe lacerations; and sprained her left ankle.
But after watching 100-milers and similar distances over the years, she decided it was her time to give a longer distance a go. Allen spent the past three months or so in Europe training, doing sections of TDS over and over to prepare herself for the challenge.“The reason TDS drew my attention was because it’s so technical, more wild, steeper, and everything I love about an utlra,” Allen told.
“My plan going in was to stay steady on the uphill and not go hard too early on the downhills when I can,” Allen said. “You never expect to be close in a race at this distance, but it weirdly kept me calm, and helped me worry about myself. That’s all you can really do, especially when I have to take care of myself doing a distance this long.”
