Over 20 hikers were evacuated from the summit of Mount Washington via the Cog Railway after being caught off guard by early winter weather. The incident prompted reminders from New Hampshire State Parks about the importance of preparedness, as conditions at the summit can differ greatly from the valley. Winter conditions had already begun earlier in October, with significant snowfall reported.
Winter has arrived atop New England's highest peaks, apparently to the surprise of many hikers who summited the region's highest point back on Saturday. According to ain a popular New Hampshire hiking group, some 20+ people were evacuated via the Cog Railway after being unprepared for the elements.
also mentions that some had thought that the Mount Washington summit facilities and auto road were open, but both in fact were already closed for the season. New Hampshire State Parks is now reminding folks to be better prepared for trips to 6,288' summit amid the wintry conditions. What may be 50 degree day in the valley can be drastically different atop the high peaks of the White Mountains. Winter conditions on Mount Washington actually began earlier this month with the first icing event on the summit taking place on October 10th, followed by the first measurable snowfall on October 16th. The Northeast's highest peak typically average's close to 18 inches of snowfall throughout the month of October, so the winterlike conditions should not have come as a surprise to climbers. According to the Mount Washington Observatory, the summit of Mount Washington has now recorded 11 inches on the young snow season. Despite the Facebook post claiming some were nearly hypothermic, thankfully there were no serious injuries or illness following the railway evacuations.
